Palani is a temple town, dedicated to the god of war, Murugan or Kartikeya, presiding deity of the famous Palani temple ,Situated at a height of 1500 feets from the sea level. The temple is built high on a hill overlooking the little town and the Palani hills, where Kodaikanal lies, form a picturesque backdrop to the temple town. The view from Palani is dominated by two hills – Sivagiri, which is the site of the temple, and Sakthigiri. At the foothills lie several lakes which drain into the Shanmuga river, named for the deity, Murugan who is also Shanmugan. This is a tributary of the Amaravathi which is birthed on the slopes of the Palni Hills. According to historions Palani has been mentioned as Podhini.This is a marvelous point from which the peoples can see the Idumban Hills, Kodaikanal hills, Western Ghats, and the almost Palani town. Palani has been immortalized by the ancient and wondrous Tamil Siddhar healer-saints. One of them Bhogar, created and consecrated the idol of Murugan.
