Palani is a temple town, dedicated to the god of war, Murugan or Kartikeya, presiding deity of the famous Palani temple ,Situated at a height of 1500 feets from the sea level. The temple is built high on a hill overlooking the little town and the Palani hills, where Kodaikanal lies, form a picturesque backdrop to the temple town. The view from Palani is dominated by two hills – Sivagiri, which is the site of the temple, and Sakthigiri. At the foothills lie several lakes which drain into the Shanmuga river, named for the deity, Murugan who is also Shanmugan.
